Inspired by Emily Spivack's Worn Stories, this is a poem celebrating my well-worn, well-loved jean jacket from Charlotte Russe.
My Jean Jacket from Charlotte Russe
Shannon VanZegeren
It hung on the clearance rack, marked down to ten
A lucky discovery while shopping with friends
There hung a jacket of dark denim blue
My fated jean jacket from Charlotte Russe
I was only in high school, so young and so green
There was so much of the world that remained to be seen
So when I jumped from the nest and finally flew
It was in my jean jacket from Charlotte Russe
It dressed up my jeans, and it dressed down my dress
It was the classic reminder that classy is best
And the cutest of outfits it would always produce
That trusty jean jacket from Charlotte Russe
And when first dates arise, the question of questions!
What will I wear to make an impression?
He arrived in a sports car, so suave and so smooth
I sported my jean jacket from Charlotte Russe
Once stiff in the shoulders, it’s now broken in
It gives me a confidence in my own skin
Out on the dance floor, I’ll show you my moves
While wearing my jean jacket from Charlotte Russe
Ten years ago, the best ten bucks I’ve spent
Although there was no way that I knew that then
So whether ballgames or ballrooms, I know that I’ll choose
My favorite jean jacket from Charlotte Russe
