Women Who Inspire: Sara Groves

Sara Groves is a contemporary singer/songwriter and I listen to her music almost every morning as I get ready for the day. She inspires me because I’ve never felt a more deeply spiritual connection to any other music or lyrics in my life. Sometimes when I hear her songs I think to myself, how did Sara Groves read my mind? That’s exactly how I feel. Her music gives me courage, and makes me not feel so alone in my spiritual journey. Through music, she’s able to capture the doubts and dark places we all find ourselves at times. But she also captures the joy, reassurance, and hope we have in this life when look to God and His Word for answers.

She honestly admits to human frailty:

“I can’t run with the horses/ If I can’t keep up with men/ I can fight all these forces/ On my own and never win” (I’ll Wait)

But also reminds us of the redeeming love we have in Jesus Christ:

“I believe in a peace that flows deeper than pain/ That broken find healing in love/ Pain is no measure of His faithfulness/ He withholds no good thing from us” (Open My Hands)

I could go on and on about different songs that have spoken to me at different times in my life. But instead, you should just check Sara’s music out for yourself and see how you connect to the music. It’s hard for me to narrow it down, so I’ll recommend three full albums that you won’t regret taking the time to listen to and ponder. To hear her original music, check out Invisible Empires or Floodplain. I also recommend Abide With Me, an album devoted to bringing back many familiar hymns with new arrangements.

Let me know what you think about Sara Groves or which of her songs have meant the most to you. Sara Groves inspires me to sing with honesty and sing in response to what the Lord has done in my life.
